Paramount sponsors Property Institute events
24 June 2010 - Paramount Services sponsored the inaugural Property Institute of New Zealand (PINZ) Managers' Mixer held on Thursday 24 June at the Northern Steamship Bar in Auckland. All property and facilities managers were invited to attend the free event regardless of their involvement with the Institute.
"The intention of the Managers' Mixer events is to re-engage with property and facilities managers," said Tyrell Snelling, chairman of the Property and Facilities Management (P&FM) Council. More than 70 asset and property and facilities managers turned out to hear what the Institute is planning for the property and facilities management professional community.
Mr Snelling outlined the group's focus for 2010/11 in a short presentation entitled 'Building our Community'. The P&FM Council is focused on delivering content specifically for property and facilities managers and requested engagement from members to ensure their interests were being addressed.
He said education, legislation, networking and membership were the four areas being immediately targeted by the P&FM Council. Further Managers' Mixer events will be held in Wellington on 21 July and in Christchurch later in the year.
"We intend that the Managers' Mixer events will be held several times a year in each of the main centres to continue to keep the community informed of the programmes we are developing and to provide a networking forum for members."
Paramount Services underwrote the bar tab and nibbles at the event. Paramount general manager Paul Brown confirmed that as the initial Auckland event had been such a success the sponsorship would be extended to cover the Wellington and Christchurch events.
Paramount Services buys Security Cleaning Services
Through the acquisition of Security Cleaning Services Paramount Services will take over the cleaning of 80 ASB Bank branches in the upper North Island. Auckland 21 May 2010 - Paramount Services has bought privately owned Auckland-based cleaning company Security Cleaning Services for an undisclosed sum.
Paramount Services managing director Galvin Bartlett says the acquisition will enable Paramount to further grow its network of 100+ franchisees who service more than 1,300 sites in 25 cities and towns nationwide.
Security Cleaning Services was established in 1987 and serves a wide range of prestigious clients including 80 ASB Bank sites in Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty and the head offices of Fletchers in Penrose, Mighty River Power and Barfoot & Thompson in downtown Auckland.
Paramount Services' purchase of Security Cleaning Services is the latest in a series of acquisitions over the last five years including Auckland-based commercial cleaning company Office & General in February 2005, Bay of Plenty-based cleaning company Cleanup Group in September 2007 and Christchurch-based Nu-Look Cleaning in January 2008.
Bartlett says the acquisitions have enabled Paramount to establish a strong nation-wide franchise network to service national clients. "The purchase of Security Cleaning Services provides economies of scale as the new business can be managed through our well established back-office accounting system and customer service centre."

Paramount officially launched in Taranaki
12 February 2010 - Paramount Services officially launched its Taranaki franchise with after work drinks and canapés for clients and invited businesspeople at the distinctive Oraukawa Lodge, south of New Plymouth on Friday 12 February. Commercial cleaning franchisees Shayde and Emma Martin actually took on the Paramount franchise in mid-2009 but they were so busy that February was the first chance they had to hold their launch event.
2009 was a huge year for Shayde and Emma (nee Coneglan) – and 2010 promises to be another big one as they consolidate and add new clients and staff to their rapidly growing business.
The couple became the first Paramount Services franchise business owners in Taranaki. Initially they had seven clients, Farmers New Plymouth, BNZ Stratford, BNZ New Plymouth, Crown Relocations, RadioWorks, Wells Instruments & Electrical and Waitara New World and just a handful of staff.
In about nine months the business doubled with new clients Bell Block and Vogel Town Four Square stores, United Video, Speedy Signs, USA Speciality Products, Checkers Fast Food, Stevens and Godfrey. The franchise business's staff has grown to 15.
Shayde says the business has grown through contacts and personal approaches. "I always make sure the people I am approaching are comfortable to chat with me over a cup of tea. We don't cut prices to get new work. We deliver a high level of service for a fair price and clients value that."
Before Paramount Shayde had worked as a customer service, operations and branch manager for a multinational commercial cleaning company. He had also managed cleaning at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland for 18 months, worked as a supermarket produce manager and owned a fruit shop. Emma had previously worked in finance administration.
Emma now specialises on the administration side of the business and staff management while Shayde looks after the operational side and manages client relationships.
If starting a new business wasn't enough in one year, on 28 November Shayde and Emma were married at St Marks Church, Lepperton. Sadly Emma's Mum Diane Coneglan passed away just four days later as a result of cancer.
With their business in full swing and Diane's terminal illness the couple did not take a honeymoon after their wedding but were straight back into work on Sunday 30 November. They did manage to take a week away in January and Emma is planning a delayed honeymoon.
With support from Paramount Services, Shayde and Emma plan to make their business a leading commercial cleaner in Taranaki.
Paramount again wins Business Services Franchise System of the Year award
14 November 2009 - Paramount Services has once again won the Business Services Franchise System of the Year award at the Westpac New Zealand Franchise Awards.
It is the second year running that Paramount Services has won the award. The other finalist in the business services category this year was another commercial cleaning company, Jani-King.
Paramount Services franchisees, Ron and Pat Dalton from Hamilton and Vicky Jiang and Eric Wang from Auckland were finalists in the Business Services Franchisee of the Year award.
Paramount Services general manager Paul Brown said in the current challenging economic environment the combined achievement of Paramount franchisees and franchisor is testimony to the overall quality of the Paramount franchise.
"The Business Systems Franchise System of the Year award recognises the dedication, loyalty and hard work of everyone in the Paramount family – our staff, our franchisees and our suppliers."
In accepting the award Paul Brown gave acknowledged company founders Galvin and Sue Bartlett. "This year is special to them as 30 years ago this month, this courageous and relatively young couple, stepped out of the comfort of working for someone else and started Paramount.
"There have been many 'trials and tribulations' but the highlights have to include the franchising industry recognising 30 years of innovation and sheer tenacity and last year being awarded the Supreme Franchise System of the Year, the highest honour a franchisor can achieve.
"We look forward to promoting Paramount Services as one of New Zealand’s most respected home grown businesses."

Paramount Services gets ISO environmental certification
21 February 2009 - Paramount Services has been certified for the internationally recognised ISO 14001:2004 standard for environmental management systems.
ISO 14001:2004 specifies requirements for an environmental management system to enable an organisation to develop and implement environmental policy and meet relevant legal requirements.
Paramount Services managing director Galvin Bartlett said the ISO certification was the next step in the company’s longstanding commitment to environmentally friendly cleaning practices.
The company’s sustainable cleaning practices include:
- Using chemical cleaners supplied by eco-friendly EcoLab
- Using microfibre cleaning cloths to minimise chemical cleaning and water use
- Using biodegradable detergent for window cleaning
- Supplying five star Govt 3 approved toilet paper made from recycled paper
- Using New Zealand-made biodegradable plastic bags
- Offering daytime cleaning to minimise power use out of office hours
- Quarterly testing of company vehicles to ensure they are running optimally
Paramount Services also offers its clients a comprehensive and easy to use recycling service for paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, aluminium, steel and tin cans and food waste. Paramount has helped a number of large New Zealand companies to introduce recycling schemes for their office waste.
John Bryden of ISO auditor Telarc said certified companies were reassessed every six months to ensure they were maintaining their compliance with the standard.
Paramount Services named Supreme Franchise System
(Paramount's Paul Brown, Galvin & Sue Bartlett, Bill Wu) 8 November 2008 - Paramount Services has swept through the 14th annual Westpac Franchise Awards winning the Supreme Franchise System of the Year and the BDO Spicers Business Services Franchisor and Franchisee of the Year categories.
While the votes were being counted on Saturday 8 November to decide who would be New Zealand's next government, the $16 billion franchise sector rewarded its top performers at a black tie dinner in Auckland.
Head awards judge Professor Gael McDonald said Paramount Franchise Services delivered "the complete franchise package. It has excellent approaches, well deployed, for excellent results." Paramount Franchise Services impressed the judges with its compliance and quality management systems, staff training and commitment to environmentally friendly cleaning and recycling.
"Effective leadership processes and productive service delivery processes are the foundation of Paramount Franchise Services' capability in striving to reach its vision," the judges said. "Business performance metrics are in place and demonstrate the beginnings of a balanced and rapidly-improving organisation and network."
The judges said Hamilton-based Paramount Services franchisee Dalton Family Trust has a focussed approach to productivity, training and delivery which has shone through in a business that is only 14 months old. Judges noted that Ron and Pat Dalton have excellent communication tools in place with customers, franchisor and staff and are growing from strength to strength. Ron and Pat are very proactive with their customers. "We ask 'What more can we do for you' and our catchphrase is 'Nothing is a problem.'"
New Zealand Franchise Association chairman Estelle Logan said this year's awards attracted a 50% increase in entries – and that was on top of a record number of entries last year. "Businesses were judged by nationally recognised criteria and the process was 'vigorous,'" Mrs Logan said.
Professor McDonald said franchising was very important to the New Zealand economy as it gave new entrants an easy access into a proven and established business, with an inbuilt opportunity for mentoring, advice and guidance.
And for businesses that wanted to grow, becoming a franchisor provided a framework for documenting all the business systems and to benefit from the input of franchisees. "In effect, everybody is working on your business." The winning franchisee and franchisor of the year entries were good examples of this she said.
Three other Paramount Services franchisees were been named as finalists in this year's awards. They were:

Gisborne open for business
4 August 2008 - Business partners Chris Rowe and Jon Bain have launched a Paramount Services franchise in Gisborne with one large retailer and another medium-sized retailer as foundation clients and more in prospect.
The pair bring complementary skills and experience to the Gisborne Paramount Services franchise. A former farmer, Jon has been involved in the set-up and operation of many Gisborne businesses – his most recent being the Derby Street Apartments.
Chris’s father had a cleaning business in Auckland so Chris grew up around corporate cleaning. A qualified chef, Chris has nevertheless turned to the cleaning business and spent the last six years doing educational cleaning in Auckland before deciding on a change in pace of life for his family by moving to Gisborne.
As the Paramount Services Gisborne franchise has been getting established, Chris says there has been a lot of interest in the telephone and keyboard sanitising service. “This is especially useful at the change of the seasons when people are vulnerable to colds and flu. The office equipment sanitising service can reduce the spread of viruses around an office and the number of work days lost through illness.”
While Chris and Jon have the back-up and experience of a well-established national cleaning company, Paramount Services’ Gisborne clients will be looked after by a locally owned and operated franchise. “When you deal with Paramount Services in Gisborne, you’ll be dealing directly with us,” says Jon.
